Atyrau Region

Atyrau (Kazakh: Атырау облысы, Atyraý oblysy; Russian: Атырауская Область, romanized: Atyrauskaya Oblast) formerly known as Gur'yev (Russian: Гурьевская Область, Gur'yevskaya Oblast), is one of the regions of Kazakhstan, in the west of the country around the northeast of the Caspian Sea. Its capital is the town of Atyrau, with a population of 142,500; the region itself has a population of 480,000, of which Kazakhs make up more than 80%.
