Classica is a French magazine dedicated to classical music and jazz, offering in-depth coverage of news, reviews, interviews, and cultural analyses since its founding in 1998 by Stéphane Chabenat, Bertrand Dermoncourt, and Jérémie Rousseau. Originally published in print as a monthly title, it has evolved through key mergers, including one with Répertoire in 2004 to form Classica-Répertoire and another with Le Monde de la musique in 2009, reverting to its original name while expanding its scope to include hi-fi equipment critiques alongside discography evaluations. The magazine is renowned for its Chocs Classica recommendations, which highlight exceptional recordings across genres and eras, serving as a trusted guide for enthusiasts and professionals alike. Its content emphasizes accessibility, featuring thematic dossiers, event agendas, quizzes, and explorations of classical music's intersections with broader culture, such as its influence on film, literature, and contemporary arts. Ownership has shifted multiple times, from acquisition by the L’Express group in 2000, to Groupe Altice Media (2015–2017), the EMC2 group (2017–2019), and Humensis (2019–2025), before a period of instability. In early 2025, publication ceased following the acquisition of its then-publisher Humensis by Albin Michel, but it relaunched in 2025 as a fully digital platform under new independent ownership by Marie Mawad, Natacha Valla, Alexandre Boksenbaum-Granier, Olivier Girard, and Philippe Venturini as editor-in-chief, with a free newsletter and plans for subscription models to sustain its mission of broadening access to classical music.
