With a surface area of 142 km2, Lake Como in the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Verbano. Its strange shape -- an inverted "Y" -- is formed of its three arms: Colico to the north, Lecco to the southeast and Como to the southwest. With a depth of 410 metres, it is the deepest lake in Europe. The town of Varenna, on the Lecco arm, has the best-preserved mediaeval past of the whole lake basin and is a corner of paradise very much appreciated by tourists from all around the world. When Behrens came to this town, he was bewitched by its magical enchantments. |
