Super Rod was published by Buckaroo Publishing and John Dianna. Dianna was a successful executive at Petersen Publishing. But when EMAP-Petersen was sold to Primedia in 1998, he left to form his own company. Buckaroo owned a number of other titles including Rodders Digest and Street Rod Builder. More on John Dianna can be found HERE. This was in all respects a high quality magazine and one of the best in this time period. It was a slick publication with anywhere from 100 to 140 pages of content. It was launched simultaneously with Street Rod Builder. Super Rod focused on cars from the 1950s and onward while the other focused on pre-1948 traditional hot rods. The photography on the covers is astonishing. Many issues gave a dreamy quality to the vehicle. You loved the way it moved (or appeared to move). and it floated in time and space. All you see is color and shape. Super Rod featured in-depth technical articles and how-to's. High dollar builds were featured, and, although the stated editorial intent was to help the home builder. the level of quality and investment in these cars was well beyond the means for 99% of readers.
